Doublethink, our whole whole society revolves around it. The party (government) has the ability to change anything.You can wake up one morning and find out that two plus two is no longer 4, but rather it is five. Doublethink is the ability to see and believe anything you are told. If you see a dog, but the party says it's a cat, then you MUST see a cat. "Freedom is the freedom to say 2+2=4,"(pg. 90) clearly states that doublethink is a way of taking all the thoughts that the party doesn't approve of, and locking them away in a cage. No one has the freedom to say 2+2=4.
Telescreens are the most disatrous inventions ever made. They pry in on your lives giving you no privacy. "The telescreen it was called, it could be dimmed, but there was no way of turning it off completely."(pg. 4) Telescreens are probably one of the main ways the party catches you. They watch your every move, they know who you are, and one way or another you WILL get caught. They are huge! You can find them in every room of every house, on every building, you can't hide from them. They are a full invasion of privacy. They disgust me. The party simply wants us all under their strict control, and in order to do that, they spy on us.
The biggest feart of all is ROOM 101. No one knows what is in there, but at the same time, everyone knows. They say that it is the only way to cure the mind of all unpure thoughts. It leads you to the ultimate betrayal if everything you love. Everything you believe in is altered into what they want you to believe in. You have no say in what they do to you. They won't even kill you if you ask them. After anyone encounters a visit to ROOM 101, they could be dead, or they could be cured. "He loved Big Brother."(pg. 326) Thats what they want. They want you to love Big Brother, they want you to to love the party, they want you to be completely brainwashed to the point where you believe anything.
As you can see Boethius, this is not a place of happiness. It is a place of lies and betrayal. If you aren't careful, you'll end up loving Big Brother too.
